Turn the iPhone into “brick” from the eighties

Do you remember the huge phone, so-called ”bricks” that ravaged world of the eighties and nineties with us. If you want to liv up the technology of the past, it has enabled by Mobile Phone Massif.

Made identical to the model from the eighties, this amendment will turn your iPhone intoa phone that used the businessmen and yuppies nearly three decades. (continue reading…)

What types of products are manufactured from recycled rubber?

Recycled rubber can be used in a variety of products to reduce the impact of rubber production and disposal of the earth. The most common forms of these recycled products including rubber matting, rubber mulch, rubber flooring, and granulated rubber. The granulated rubber can be used in the treatment of recycled tires.
Rubber mulch is a relatively new product, which is used in a variety of settings. The mulch is often made of unwanted tires. There are various grades and sizes of rubber mulch. Recreational grade rubber mulch is often used in playground settings, and are generally smaller in size than landscaping mulch. The lower the certified percentage of recycled metal in rubber, the safer the rubber mulch can be.
Recycled rubber can also be transformed to the floor products. This floor can be used both indoors and outdoors as a clean alternative. Outdoor rubber flooring is often made to mimic the look of pavers or grass, while the indoor counterparts can be made to look like wood or colorful mats suitable for use in a playroom or home gym. This type of flooring is often in pieces that are assembled to create one large rubber mat. (continue reading…)

Micro-motor for tiny refrigerators

Tiny heat engine can be used for active cooling of high-clocked processors.

Steam engines, diesel engines or cooling systems: All of these devices are based on heat engines that can afford to incineration or other thermodynamic processes work. Smaller than a dice, these engines are not built yet, so they can be used in micro-mechanical systems is limited. But now Dutch researchers managed through a self-reinforcing oscillation process, with a few cubic microns to produce seven orders of magnitude smaller heat engine. The prototype they made in the scientific journal “Nature Physics” before.

Peter Steeneken and his colleagues at Research in Eindhoven, the chip manufacturer NXP offset a few microns in small single-crystal resonator of n-type silicon with alternating current pulses in small oscillations. Because of the piezoresistive effect of the material changed from these movements, the electrical resistance. This enabled a direct current flowing parallel to the resonator more or less heat. These temperature fluctuations could expand or shrink the material and turns. This is the basis for a heat engine similar to a combustion engine, lift in which the cylinders and quickly cut.

In the case of resonance, the resonator converts electrical and thermal energy as a heat engine into mechanical motion. Although this is an impressive base experiment, it could lead to practical applications themselves. Because of this thermodynamic process could in theory develop cooling modules that are integrated due to their size in fast-clocked processors and could these cool active.

Dogs can sniff out cancer

First reports about the cases in which patients with cancer claimed their dogs sensed presence of certain anomalies in their body before any mediacal exams could detect them appered in late 80′s in last century.

One of these examples is described by researcher who reported that his dog was especially interested in a skin lesion, which turned out to be a skin cancer. It is believed that cancer creates distinctive odors, unrecognizable to the man, but obvious to the sensitive dog’s nose. In fact it is shown that levels of protein in urine and blood of cancer patients are abnormal.

An experiment was conducted for seven months in England. Trained dogs of different breeds were observed in order to distinguish bladder cancer from urine samples.

The results were published in the British Medical Journal. Published materials reveal that dogs were able to react to samples of cancer patients in 22 of 54 samples, which is almost impossible with regular surveys which can identify such cancer by 14 percent, while the dogs did it at 41 percent.

One of the dogs drew scientists attention to a sample they considered cancer free, but the dog was determined. After several studies were conducted a tumor in the kidney was identified.

Although only experimented with six different breeds, the coker spaniel have shown the best ability to detect the disease.

The chemists hope that this discovery can identify the full range of smells dogs can detected in order to create a device that facilitates the detection of cancer.

Lab-created artificial corneas

image released by Ottawa Hospital Research Institute

Swedish and Canadian researchers have developed artificial corneas, which can provide the eye sight to visually impaired persons and to blind ones. The artificial corneas work as well as the genuine ones, which are transplanted from deceased persons.

Study describes an attempt, in which, two years ago, surgeons at the University of Linkoping, removed the damaged corneas of ten patients and instead implanted artificial corneas. Today, all these patients, have significantly improved vision and can see with the contact lenses as good as they would see with corneas from another human.
There is a great shortage of donor corneas worldwide, and ten million people are without treatment. Therefore, it is very important that this progress has been achieved and that the corneas can now be produced in the laboratory. Another benefit is that the patients with artificial corneas will be spared of taking immunosuppressive medications which are necessary after a transplant, and known for causng several side effects.

Science Takes Over Industry

Every so often there is what is commonly referred to as a revolution in the workplace. At the turn of the 20th century it was an industrial revolution that put millions of people to work and helped to make America one of the strongest nations in the world. The industrial revolution lasted for decades but in the late 1970’s it started to lose momentum.

At the turn of the 21st century the newest revolution in the workplace is a technological revolution that has seen workers replaced by technology and newer technology added to the products we buy every day. Auto makers are constantly researching new ways to use technology to make cars safer and prevent traffic casualties. Bigger and better computers are being used to not only help map our universe but also to try and determine exactly how our universe was created. With information like that the possibilities for creating new products and new manufacturing methods are almost endless.

During the industrial revolution the focus was on developing methods to create more products at a faster rate and we have taken those lessons learned and applied them to the new technological revolution. Because the manufacturing processes have already been figured out that frees up research to develop new products to help mankind and reach for information that we once thought impossible to attain.

Technology has shifted the world from a manufacturing workplace to an information and technology workplace and there seems to be no end to the advances and discoveries that can be made. As exciting as these new discoveries are it makes one wonder just want kind of revolution the workplace is in for when the century changes from the 21st century to the 22nd century.

Industrial Development Today

As developing countries around the world scramble to catch up with their industrial development, the environment is paying a high price. Developed countries have long been working to minimize environmental impact in the implementation of new industries. For countries struggling to move their economies into the 21st century, the environment is the least of their concerns.

There have been positive moves, though. The focus is shifting to sustainable development. In developing countries the impact of environmentally irresponsible industrial development has been particularly negative. Waste products from manufacturing have ruined potable water and disrupted agriculture in some regions. Natural resources have also been depleted, affecting other industries around the globe.

The United Nations (UN) have created the Environmental Development Organization (UNEDO) in order to oversee and aid in the pursuit of more sustainable approaches. UNEDO focuses on providing technical cooperation in these countries. This aids in updated the technology that the industries are using to modern standards, and providing education on how to implement realistic sustainable development.

The benefits of a sustainable plan for the developing nations are evident from the outside. Less pollution, up to date factories, and protecting the food and water supply to ensure the continued health of the local communities seems to be the only logical way to run a business. While sustainable technologies are being implemented in most new factories, getting the often underpaid workers to use them properly is an issue. Add that to the multitude of older factories that will not or can not be updated and the problem becomes apparent.

Education is key in ensuring the success of any sustainable industrial development project within both the industries and within the local governments of the affected regions. As the negative impact affects the quality of life of more people worldwide, the rush to put in place more environmentally friendly technologies becomes even more important.
